What to expect after your nasal or sinus surgery

 

What to expect the day of surgery

* It is common to have an upset stomach for the first 2 days

* Mild bleeding for the first few days

* Inside of your nose may be packed with gauze or other material, this will block your nose and you will need to breathe through your mouth

* Dry scratchy throat

 

Do not do these things for two weeks after surgery

* Nose-blowing

* Heavy lifting

* Vigorous exercise

*** These can cause bleeding!***

 

To clear the nose of blood and mucous

* Gently sniff and cough

* Gently wipe blood from below the nose with a tissue

* Sneeze with your mouth open

 

Salt-water nasal drops

* Your doctor may ask you to spray salt-water nasal drops in the nose after the packing is removed, this is extremely important for healing

 

Pain: Pain is common in the nose, upper teeth, and face

* Medicine is prescribed for your pain

* Pain can last up to one month

 

Bleeding

* mild bleeding can happen after surgery 

 

When to call the doctor’s office

* Sudden increase in pain, swelling or bruising

* Fever

* Heavy bleeding

* Yellow or green discharge from the nose

* Headache that doesn’t get better with pain medicine

* Changes in eyesight

* Stiff neck or extreme tiredness
